Kaieteur News – The fifth edition of the Bel Air Rubis sponsored U-15 cricket was launched last Saturday at the Enmore Community Centre. Cricket at the U-15 level has been playing on the East Coast Demerara thru the sponsorship by Bel Air Rubis in association with the East Coast Cricket Committee for the past five years and it remains the only U-15 cricket being played in this age category for the past decade.
Several national youth players have since emerged after commencing their cricket during these competitions and with the East Coast Demerara being defending U-15 inter-association champions, it is expected that their early preparation for this year tournament will go a long way towards retaining the title.
In delivering a brief remark at the launching, Bel Air Rubis representative – Lalta Gainda, informed representatives of ECCC and in excess of forty (40) youths between the ages of 12-14 years, that Bel Air Rubis is pleased once more to be associated with the sponsorship of youth cricket on the East Coast and he pledged his continuing support for youth cricket. Mr. Gainda further stated that he is satisfied that the ECCC has filled that vacuum on the East Coast when it comes to promoting cricket on the field and not in the courts.
Speaking on behalf of the ECCC, representative Yueraj Persaud indicated that the fact that no youth cricket outside of the ECCC organized games have been played for the past decade, it is an indictment on the part of the small group of persons who are claiming to be the office bearers of an inactive ECCB. He further indicated that what is more damming is that the majority of those persons who are said to be administrators are not part of any active clubs on the East Coast Demerara.
One of the youths from Enmore thanked the sponsor for giving him the opportunity to participate in properly organized cricket. He also indicated that he is in his fourth year at the U-15 level and despite not making much individual cricket progress he was meaningfully engaged whilst away from school.
