DEAR EDITOR,
I recently saw on the news India delivering its Covisheild Vaccine to its neighbouring countries and as far away as our neighbour Brazil. These vaccines are gifted to the countries. It shows India’s generosity to the world. The rich countries have grabbed the lions share and have made no donation to the wider world. They are in a mad drive to look into their population interest. India on the other hand is vaccinating its own population and delivering vaccine to the poor countries at the same time. India’s population is larger than any one of the rich countries yet it finds time to help other nations. India is truly the poorer countries hope for an exit to the pandemic. This morning in the Hindustani Times in India, there is an article where Prime Minister, Mia Mottley of Barbados wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking for vaccine in the form of a donation and a request to buy a further amount. Guyana has strong ties to India, culturally and economically. So my question is why isn’t the Guyana government engaging the Indian Government for vaccine help? Why are we sitting and waiting when other countries are making requests? Imagine Canada asked its neighbour the USA for vaccine help, surely there is no harm if our Government makes a friendly request for a donation and purchase an extra amount from India. We must do all we can to save our Guyanese people and get our economy going again.
Sincerely,
B. John
