Killing of taxi driver for insurance money…
Kaieteur News – A captured fugitive, who was part of a plot to ambush and brutally murder a United States-based Guyanese citizen in Guyana nine years ago, has pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
Pooran Jaundoo, 26, had multiple addresses and police had listed them as Lot 57 New Housing Scheme, Belvedere Settlement, Berbice; Second Street, Overwinning, Greater New Amsterdam and Lot 31 Section ‘B’, Cotton Tree, West Coast Berbice.
Jaundoo was wanted for the murder of US-based Guyanese, Abdool Shakeel Majid, a former New York taxi driver.
The murder took place on April 26, 2012 at the popular Number 63 Beach, Corentyne.
Pooran appeared before Justice Brassington Reynolds in the Berbice High Court.
The state’s case is being prosecuted by attorney-at-law, Abigail Gibbs.
Jaundoo, who was charged with murder, indicated to the court that he wanted to change his plea. He subsequently pleaded guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter.
He was nabbed in neighbouring Suriname in 2016 by the authorities there, after being on the run for four years. He was being grilled for a number of infringements he committed whilst over there, when he confessed to the authorities that he was wanted in Guyana for murder.
Two women including Majid’s wife, Hemwattie Abdulla, 37, who is also known as Anita Nazeema Khan, formerly of Albion, Corentyne, and of Ozone Park, New York, USA, and her alleged accomplice, Surojinie Permaul, 43, of Belvedere New Housing Scheme, Corentyne, Berbice were already convicted and sentenced to death.
Majid’s body was found with its scalp missing and other injuries at the Corentyne foreshore.
Majid had reportedly taken out a million-dollar insurance policy in the United States in March 2011. He had also been awarded a hefty settlement after being injured in an accident.
The remains were only identified on May 16, 2012, when a brother visited Guyana after becoming suspicious of his brother’s wife behaviour.
A probation report has been ordered and sentencing has been deferred for Pooran.
