Kaieteur News – The man, who is alleged to be the killer of a 16-year-old girl who was found dead after a drinking spree, was yesterday slapped with a murder charge and remanded to prison.
The defendant, Wickroy Mitchell aka “Shatta,” 38, a miner of Number 53 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, appeared virtually before Senior Magistrate Sunil Scarce in the Matthew’s Ridge Magistrate’s Court, when the indictable charge was read to him.
The charge alleged that, between November 14 -15, 2020, at Coanna Backdam, Five Star, North West District, he murdered a 16-year-old girl of Baramita Village.
Magistrate Scarce remanded the defendant to prison and he is expected to make his next court appearance on February 2, 2021, for the commencement of the Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the murder.
According to the police, the dead teen’s body was found on Sunday last behind her home at North West District. It is reported that the teen was allegedly strangled to death by the defendant. This newspaper also received information that she was raped during the process.
Investigators had revealed that around 12:00 hrs. on Saturday, the teen was seen imbibing, together with her mother, the defendant and other males at a shop in the area.
At around 15:00 hrs. the teenager and her mother became intoxicated and decided to leave the shop. However, before doing so, they purchased another bottle of rum along with a quantity of rice. The defendant also reportedly left together with them as well.
Sometime later, investigators were told that the teen’s mother returned to the shop alone and spent a while there. On Sunday around 07:30 hrs. the teen’s body was discovered lying motionless behind her home, she was transported to the Port Kaituma Hospital, where she was pronounced dead by a doctor on duty.
The matter was reported and the defendant went into hiding. However, on Tuesday the police apprehended the suspect and he was placed in custody and subsequently charged.
