Dear Editor,
We, the short-drop hire car drivers, who used to operate in the East Bank ‘Short Drop’ car park are facing another challenging situation.
Two years ago, 49 cars that used to operate in the park, were removed by the then Town Clerk, Royston King. We were replaced by stands but unto this day, the vendors have failed to occupy them.
Since then, we operated on the roads which were provided to us by the Council. Our park used to be from Brickdam to Lombard Streets, capable of accommodating 12 cars. We operate in a turn-system.
On Friday, the drivers returned to work, only to be greeted by another bad news…the area could only accommodate five cars…more than 75 percent of the cars had nowhere to park. No stopping markings were placed on the road.
This is so unfair to us. Where can we go now to operate for our daily living especially with the current COVID-19 crisis?
We, the drivers, are pleading with the minister, the mayor, the Town Clerk and those responsible for the reduction of the car park, to review the decisions taken.
We are elderly persons who cannot be employed elsewhere at this time of the year.
We have bills to pay; installments and even rent to meet.
We believe that it is a deliberate attempt to create problems for us and for us to become targets.
We ask the relevant authorities to look into the matter urgently.
