Rhonda Alder is a 27-year-old local makeup artist whose way of channeling her inner creativity is through glam and cinematic makeup. The young makeup artist began her journey when she was just 18-years-old.
She was captivated by art and quickly embraced drawing way before discovering a love for makeup.
She would often watch videos on YouTube to improve her drawing skills and it was then that she discovered makeup tutorials.
Alder became hooked to different kinds of tutorials about makeup, ranging from simple beauty glam, to creative makeup looks which allows her to portray even famous characters.
Her inspiration also came from local makeup artists including Deecarla Hodge (EyeCarly Makeup) and Tenisha Ballington (Flawless by Tenisha).
Alder would pay keen attention to the artists and their techniques, continuously practising to hone her skills.
While makeup is her passion, Alder only does this on the side. She explained that before the pandemic, she worked as a full-time sales representative and would only do makeup part time, building her skills and clientele.
She is gearing to expand into a full-time career in makeup artistry. However, the current COVID-19 pandemic has brought this to a halt.
According to Alder, makeup requires one to touch the faces of clients. For now, she records videos of her craft at least two-three times per week and upload them to her social media.
Her work has been swiftly attracting a following.
She recalled her first time doing makeup on someone other than herself…it was for cheerleaders at a CPL game.
A nervous Alder managed to impress her clients.
It proved a defining moment and gave her the confidence to continue. She knew that she wanted to do makeup not only for her own creative desires but on others as well.
She took the plunge, applied for a loan and used the money to buy the necessary products including brushes and palettes.
It would tough in the beginning. All she had was one blending blush, a regular makeup brush and other beginner products like foundation and concealer.
Alder boasted that when she compares her work from then to now she is absolutely elated with the significant growth she has seen.
She believes that the craft is often underrated.
Her dream is to be recognized internationally but first she wants to attend a makeup
school abroad.
Her aim… to do cinematic and celebrity makeup with the intentions to even open a makeup school right here in Guyana.
Her advice to upcoming makeup artists is to always trust the process.
“Things may not always seem to be going right in the beginning but one should always strive to better the technique and learn new things to produce the best results.”
Alder made it clear that there are no limits when it comes to makeup and overtime, one can even find that it is therapeutic.
