The University of Guyana Student Society (UGSS) Tain Campus team has officially launched their “UGSS Berbice COVID-19 Student’s Relief Project. The relief project is intended to provide assistance to students enrolled at the campus who are experiencing financial difficulties as a result of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Delroy Marks and Marissa Forster, both Social Work students, are two of the four UGSS representatives in Berbice. In a telephone interview with Kaieteur News, they said that there is a great need to reach out to those who are in need of assistance. Ms. Foster explained that some students are finding it extremely difficult to make ends meet as many persons have either lost their jobs or are earning far less than they did before the pandemic. This would have resulted in many students withdrawing completely from their course of study, taking leave of absence or carrying a reduced work load. These are all options for the students experiencing issues with finances. Ms. Foster went on to note that there are some students with no breadwinners in their home during this difficult period.
Marks said that those who are eligible will be given food hampers and/or Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The team is urging students to apply before June 20, 2020. Currently there is a limited number of hampers that will be available and will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis. Delivery will be done for all the hampers in the month of July by the student representatives. The society is currently working with a budget that can only accommodate hampers for a particular number of students.

The UGSS across on both campuses have embarked on similar ventures to ensure student’s welfare. Donations have been made to various faculties for development and continued efforts are being made to work along this path. The current project is being executed under the guidance of Jafar Gibbons, current UGSS president.
There are no plans to raise funds or generate additional sources of funding, but if persons are so desirous to contribute to this venture they are free to contact the representatives via email: berbicereps.uog.edu.gy or Delroy Mark on +592 650 4046 or Marissa Foster on +592 643 3529. Potential donors can be assured that all monetary transactions are done with transparency and accountability. However, it is a preference that persons can make their contributions by purchasing whatever it is that they would like to add to the hampers. All essential food items as well as protective gears and sanitizers will be accepted.
