GWI to drill additional wells in 2020

─ Fyrish, Port Kaituma, among areas to benefit

The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) says it is seeking to establish additional wells in several communities across Guyana, as it accelerates efforts to ensure that every Guyanese has access to water.
According to the water utility company’s Managing Director, Dr. Richard Van West-Charles, this year GWI with support from the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) will be adding two wells at Farm on the East Bank of Demerara.
In a radio program Friday, the Managing Director added that with the new drilling rig recently commissioned, and as soon as the required pipes can be transported from neighbouring Brazil, another well will be drilled at Fyrish on the Corentyne.
Additionally, persons residing in the community of Port Kaituma in the Barima-Waini Region will benefit from the establishment of a rig, as GWI continues to expand its services.
“We are moving apace and working to ensure all of our citizens would indeed have access not only from a COVID standpoint but from a sustainable livelihood perspective,” Dr. Van West-Charles stated.
To date, some 48 wells were successfully drilled in the last five years.
Pointing to the benefits, Dr. Van West-Charles relayed that if these projects were not accomplished, today, Guyana would have been in a difficult state, since water is needed excessively for the washing of hands, due to COVID-19.
“This is good foresight brought together by the administration as we move forward,” the Managing Director opined.
