We need to transition to a new system of government

Dear Editor,

Even if the recount is completed and the winner is known, who will be able to control the disenchanted, the anguished, the bitterness? We cannot continue like this for another month. There is already mutiny within the present leadership. There is no assurance of a smooth transition or any at all. Now is the right time to relieve the bursting pressure for all involved, find a way out for President Granger. Dictatorship will not succeed but there is a small group that believes so – we the people cannot allow them to try.
Chairperson Mottley should head a Caricom group and approach the President and the Opposition Leader with this proposal:
1) Complete the recount up to and including District 4. The GECOM will utilize the recount results for Districts 1 – 4. Others (5 –10) using declared results.
2) The incumbent will concede, and the new government installed.
3) An agreement is made for:
• A modified model of governance acceptable to all stakeholders.
• A complete overhaul of the GECOM and relevant laws to minimize all the anomalies experienced.
4) #3 above to be completed within 3 years under the chairmanship of an acceptable expert.
Hopefully, this suggestion is considered by the Caricom Secretariat with urgency. The nation hopes that David Granger will do the right thing.
