DEAR EDITOR,
It is with profound sadness, I express my deepest regret at the passing of Cde. Komal Chand, long standing president of the GAWU Trade Union.
Cde. Komal was a man of wisdom, substance and strength, a tireless fighter, steadfast and resolute in his beliefs, known to me personally close to a decade. A compassionate leader who was never too busy to attend to the numerous issues relating to sugar workers, be it industrial or personal. He always displayed a caring spirit. An effective negotiator who sees both sides of the coin and would go the extra mile to ensure positive results are realized.
Apart from these qualities, there was that jovial side of his personality which many admired.
We have lost a true stalwart and son of the soil. He will be forever remembered for his militant struggles and dedication in representing the rights and welfare of sugar workers and the working class at large.
My heartfelt condolences to his family and the GAWU. May his soul rest in peace.
Yours faithfully,
Herlene Lewis
Former GAWU Secretary
