Dear Editor,
We have a front line view of the suffering of the Venezuelan people as a result of selfish policies, the mismanagement of their economy and sanctions imposed by the U.S.
Just look around you at the number of Venezuelans in our country. Why are they here? Simply put, people run from bad to better; even a poor country like Guyana is better off than Venezuela at the moment.
The illegal actions of the APNU/AFC Coalition expose Guyana to sanctions by the U.S., Canada, Britain, the EU and CARICOM. Yes, CARICOM will have to abide by the sanctions imposed by the powerful nations. So from where is Guyana going to derive an income when it is unable to sell its sugar, rice, gold etc. on the international market? Never mind the oil; we will not see a penny from that.
We cannot be that naïve that we don’t see the writing on the wall. What will the illegitimate regime do when it has no money to pay the salaries of the civil servants, the police, the soldiers and all public employees? What will it promise you then?
More importantly, from where will all these Public Sector employees get the money to support their families? When money isn’t circulating within the country, private employers will be forced to lay off their employees too. What will we do then; flee to other countries like the Venezuelans have been forced to do?
The power is and has always been in the hands of the people to determine their future. What we do now will determine how we and our children survive. I am not speaking on behalf of any party. Neither the PPP nor the PNC has ever nor will ever have our interest at heart. All that the upper echelons of these parties ever cared about for the past 60 years are themselves. Haven’t we learnt anything from these past 60 years? Many of us run around spouting, in gallant terms, the names of these parties and politicians. We are stupid if we think they care about us.
It is up to all of us to ensure that the rule of law is upheld in this election. Let us think with our minds and not our hearts. We must not allow anyone to steal the voice of the people. But our job does not end there; we must insist that a new constitution be promulgated to replace this absurdity that is the basis of our current crisis.
Further, we must insist that those who have perpetrated this crisis be held accountable for their illegal actions and be prosecuted for the traitors that they undoubtedly are.
Sincerely yours,
Naseer Hussain
