GECOM Commissioner wants stringent security measures to protect journalists covering elections

Throughout the elections season, from March 2, 2020 to date; media personnel have faced hostility from supporters from two major political parties.
The most recent incident occurred last Friday, when three reporters were restrained from entering the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Headquarters.
GECOM Commissioner, Sase Gunraj has taken notice of this worrying trend and expressed his concerns for the safety of the media fraternity,
Gunraj stated that in light of these frequent acts of hostility, he is hoping that stringent security measures will be implemented to ensure the safety of the media.
“I know as journalists who have come under attack right here last week, your confidence in the police providing protection may not be at an all-time high…but we are hoping that as a consequence of that experience, that the necessary security arrangements by the police are put into place so that persons like you, the media who are important stakeholders in this process, are not affected from doing your work.”
The attacks on reporters have prompted the Guyana Press Association to state that the leaders of the major political parties, the Police Commissioner along with members of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) will be held responsible for any harm brought to media professionals as they conduct their duties during this season.
There have been numerous reports of the media being threatened, harassed and physically attacked while covering the elections.
