Dear Editor,
It has been reported in the news media that the President of the Republic, has proclaimed that the National Flag of Guyana be flown at half-staff on government buildings on July 23 for the funeral of the late President of Haiti, Jovenel Moise, who was assassinated earlier this month. This iconic symbol of respect and solidarity for the people of Haiti for the loss of their President after due consideration of his anti-democratic abuses in their lives, should be deemed disdainful.
President Moise’s increasingly authoritarian actions was one of the Caribbean’s strongmen who cascaded Haitians further into poverty, as well as, creating financial, economic and public health crises. His vote to power was marred with allegations of fraud as he ruled Haiti by decree for over a year, prior to his assassination. Guyana’s exhibition of respect, solidarity and empathy for Haitians on the death of their autocratic President who failed to address their problems, should be considered as hollow sentiments unworthy of our country’s commendation.
