Lands and Surveys opens $36M Crane Village office

The Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission commissioned a spanking new $36M sub-office and living quarters at Nouvelle Flanders (Crane Public Road), West Coast Demerara, yesterday.

The New GLSC’s sub-office and living quarters located at Nouvelle Flander (Crane Public Road), West Coast Demerara.

The opening occurred months after a similar facility was commissioned in New Amsterdam, Berbice, Region Six.
The opening was at a time when the Commission is making momentous changes to provide 21st century Land Administration, mapping, surveying, and other services to the Guyanese people.
The facility is specially designed to accommodate persons with disabilities.
Delivering remarks at the opening of the office, Director General of the Ministry of the Presidency, Joseph Harmon, said that he is happy to note that the commission has been responding to the vision of the President by taking Government services to the people.
“When I looked at this building, I recognised that the GLSC has taken the question of service to the people seriously. The GLSC did not provide a building where it is air-conditioned only for staff and the public is seated in the hot sun; the staff and public will enjoy the same level of comfort,” he stated.
Harmon said that the Lands Commission has been leading by example. As a result, clients are responding well to the improved services.
“All over the country at the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission, there is almost a movement of trying to improve the quality and the standard of facilities for the staff and for clients.”
Meanwhile, Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission, Trevor Benn, said that the construction of this new building serves as a part of the Commission’s efforts to improve its infrastructure to efficiently rollout its improved operations.
“When I arrived at the Commission, the buildings across the country were more or less in a dilapidated state. Our staff endured really substandard working conditions for a long time,” Benn said.
According to Benn, the upgrading of the Commission’s office countrywide is just the beginning of what is to come for the Commission.
“We are committed to ensuring that our services are deployed in an efficient and transparent manner. In addition to the new buildings that we are constructing, we are working to ensure that our facilities, equipment, and materials which are to provide quality services to our people are also of high standards.”
Commissioner Benn added that the Commission is working with the University of Twente in the Netherlands to help train the Commission’s staff to have a more comprehensive database so that the Commission can better manage their client base.
“The system is to ensure that in the not too distant future, our clients do not need to come to our offices for service but these services can be accessed online,” Benn said.
Board Member, Ms. Kim Stephens, who spoke on behalf of the Board of Directors, said that the Board continues to be impressed by the work of the Commission and will lend its support when called upon.
“As a Board, we remain committed to working with the Commission to achieve its mandate in an efficient and effective manner. I encourage the staff who will be stationed here to provide quality service to the citizens of this region.” Ms. Stephens urged.
Minister within the Ministry of Social Protection, Keith Scott, also addressed the opening.
