Digital learning now available to Region Six schools

Hundreds of students from 14 primary schools in East Berbice Corentyne (Region Six) now have access to digital learning. The digital learning initiative is part of the ‘ProFuturo’ project, funded by the Organization of American States (OAS).

The initiative will see the introduction and enhancement of digital learning in the region.
The handing-over ceremony was held at the Cumberland Primary School, one of the recipients of the kits. The other schools that received kits on Monday were the Edinburg Primary, Overwinning Primary, Locaber Primary, Sandvoort Primary, St. Theresa’s Primary, New Amsterdam Primary, All Saints Primary, St. Aloysius Primary, Fort Ordnance Primary, Sheet Anchor Primary School, Rose Hall Estate Primary, Betsy Ground Primary and Gangaram Primary Schools. The schools are all from the New Amsterdam / Canje catchment area.
The kits are as a result of collaboration between the Organisation of American States (OAS), the ProFuturo Foundation and the Ministry of Education.
Minister of Education, Dr. Nicolette Henry, said that education in Guyana is embarking on major changes to students’ learning and knowledge acquisition. Technology has influenced and changed the way thing are done.
Initiatives that will continue to provide opportunities for Guyanese to advance in this technological era are very much welcomed by the government.
Minister Henry called on those in attendance to harness the opportunities, and combine efforts in the maintenance and sustainability of the kits as they capitalise on the correct usage and learning abilities that will be created.
She added that the initiative is a good bounce for the country decade of development as the country is adequately prepared for technological growth.
The OAS Country Representative in Guyana, Ambassador Jean Ricot Dormeus, stated that the programme aims to prepare the next generation for the future.
He said that education is the twin sister of freedom and that technology works as a great equalizer allowing us to transform the world from our huts to our gated communities. He said that the partnership between the OAS, ProFuturo and the Government of Guyana is to provide education to the most challenging and vulnerable communities.
The Ambassador further stated that the $152,000 Euros project will benefit more than 5000 children across Regions One, six and 10 and almost 500 teachers will receive training on modern methodologies and how to use technology to enhance the learning experience of students.
Regional Education Officer, (ag) Ms. Bhagmattie LaCruz said that the initiative marks an extraordinary day for education in the Region where there will be the advancement of Information Communication Technology (ICT).
The ProFuturo kits comprise of 40 tablets, one router, a projector and a laptop.
Guyana signed a technical assistance cooperation agreement with the OAS and the ProFuturo Foundation in May 2019.
Following the handing-over ceremony Minister Henry and Ambassador Dormeus along with officials visited the Gangaram Primary School as a model school for ProFuturo implementation.
Earlier in January, Hosororo Primary, in Region One received the first batch of ProFuturo digital learning kits.
