Deonarain, Gaffur shine in Blairmount wins over Young Achievers and Paradise
Thirteen-year-old Romeo Deonarain enjoyed a wonderful weekend at the Blairmount Estate ground in West Bank Berbice with an accomplished half-century on Saturday and a five-wicket haul on Sunday, while Rashaad Gaffur was on fire on Saturday with a classy unbeaten ton as Blairmount won
both of their matches to make an auspicious start to their campaign in the Berbice Cricket Board’s Lewison General Store U-15 50 overs tournament.
In Saturday’s encounter, the West Bank Berbice side defeated Achievers by 229 runs before disposing of Paradise by 143 runs the next day.
Led by a pugnacious unbeaten 140 from Gaffur, which was decorated with 18 fours and two sixes while Deonarain, who reached the boundary once in a well-played 56, spearheaded Blairmount to an imposing 289-3 from their 50 overs on a good track and fast outfield.
Rawl Dindyal and Muneshwar Gobin chipped in with 15 and 12 respectively for the club which produced Test players the late Roy Fredericks and pacer Brandon Bess who played his only Test against South Africa in Barbados.
Watched by a fair size gathering, Chris Hardcourt captured 2-27 from eight overs for Achievers who were bundled out for 60 despite 16 from Trevor Connaly as Sajaad Ishmael captured 3-3 and along with Gaffur who had 3-7, destroyed the visitor’s batting.
On Sunday, at the same venue the home team beat Paradise by 143 runs after making 217 and bowling out Paradise for 75.
Deonarain followed his century on the previous day with 40 with three fours before he was run out. Deonarain was supported by a solid 37 from Arun Jaikaran who was also run out while Gaffur contributed 20 before he was bowled. Blairmount were aided by a whopping 77 extras.
In reply Paradise were bundled out in 17.3 overs as only Opener Daniel Ramotar, who reached the boundary four times and cleared it once in 37 offered resistance to Deonarain, who captured 5-34 and Ishmael who had 3-15. Nobody else reached double figures for the West Coast Berbice unit.
Lewison General Store is located at Williamsburg Village, Corentyne in Berbice.
