Giant killers Coomacka down Silver Shattas to reach semis; Panthers trounce Botafago
Giant killers, Coomacka Football Club which hails from the mines area in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden are through to the semifinals of this year’s Upper Demerara Football Associaiton Christmas Championship having downed Silver Shattas 4-3 when play continued on Wednesday last at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground.
The other match played saw Amelia’s Ward Panthers gaining a 3-0 win over Botafago. Coomacka, after upsetting top seed Net Rockers needed to beat the Shattas to earn a final four spot and that they did in what has placed Net Rockers out of contention as they now play Shattas in the last group game which cannot deny Coomacka that final four placing.
Lionel Peters (Jnr.) was the player who gave Coomacka the lead in the 26th minute and teammate Wheatan Thom to the delight of the appreciative spectators made it 2-0 in the 34th minute.
But one minute later Felix Inniss would pull one back for the Shattas making it 2-1, the score line remained unchanged at the half way mark. Coomacka’s advantage would increase in the 52nd minute through a Keron Charles goal and the advantage was further stretched by Gary Savoury’s 59th minute effort, a 4-1 advantage.
But Silver Shattas did take the fight to their opponents and were rewarded when Jermaine Samuels scored in the 61st minute. As the game was heading to a finish, Shattas would score on the stroke of fulltime through Andy Norville to leave the final score agonizingly close, 4-3.
Game two produced a comfortable result for Amelia’s Ward Panthers which beat the number two ranked team in this competition, Botafago 3-0. The result would mean that Panthers have strengthened their chances of advancing after losing their opening game while Botafago cannot say the same.
Panthers gained the lead in the 26th minute through Dellon Luke and then increased it when Romeo Allen scored in the 61st minute. Their third goal was registered in the 78th minute off the boot of Bevon Hinds.
The action continues tonight with Hi Stars and Capital FC going head to head in opening play to be followed by a clash between Topp XX and Aroiama.
