A murder accused is now imprisoned after he was found guilty of being in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunitions two years ago.
Brian Mohan, called ‘Abdul’, was on trial before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. It was this magistrate that handed down the sentence to the defendant yesterday.
He had pleaded not guilty to the two charges on his first appearance before the court. It was alleged that on March 3, 2017, at North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, Mohan had in his possession a .32 Taurus pistol without being the owner of a firearm licence at the time.
It was also alleged that on the same day and at the same location, he had in his possession 10 live rounds of .32 ammunitions without being a licensed firearm holder at the time.
The magistrate ruled at the conclusion of the trial that the prosecution was able to prove every element of its case and as such, the defendant should be sentenced for the offences. She then imposed a sentence of two years imprisonment.
Earlier this year, Mohan was committed to face a Judge and Jury for trial, into the murder of Festival City resident, Christopher Wharton, also known as ‘Tapps’ or ‘Chrissy’. Wharton was gunned down on November 18, 2015 at Festival City, North Ruimveldt.
According to reports, Wharton of Lot 1960 Buggy Peak Street, Festival City, was shot to his hand, left butt and groin area by gunmen, known to him.
It was reported that the dead man’s five-year-old son was hit on his left leg by one of the six shots fired by the men. The shooting is said to have occurred around 17:00 hrs on the day.
Mohan was joined on the murder charge by Rickford Jones, 24, of Lot 3093 North Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
