The 59th National Schools’ Track & Field Championships gets underway from November 17-21 at National Track & Field Center (NTFC), Leonora, and to this end, the other districts are in the process of finalising their track teams.
Yesterday, East Zone (District 12), held their ‘Champions of Champions’ event at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary to select the top athletes that will be representing the Zone, yet to win a single National championship.
Cordell Charles, who won the Under-16 800m at the 58th National Schools’ Championships, ran away with the Under-18 middle distance double (800m & 1500m) along with the 5000m race yesterday.
Thea Thornill of New Campbellville won the Girls’ Under-18 1500m while Aleka Persaud of St. Joseph High (SJH) won the Under-14 Girls middle distance double. In the popular sprint races, Princess Browne of Tutorial High took the 100m, 200m sprint double in the Girls Under-18 age group after losing her pet event; the Long Jump, to Roshanna Warren of New Campbellville on Wednesday.
However, Browne, who represented Guyana at Carifta Games this year, won the triple jump event. Stafon Roach won the Boys’ Under-18 high, triple and long jumps. Thenica Thompson of New Campbellville won the 100m and 200m races in the Girls Under-16 competition while Nationals’ Track & Field Under-14 Champion Boy in 2018, David Higgins of St. Joseph High will be returning to the event this year are making light work of the under-16 100-200m sprints.
Andrew Baptiste of New Campbellville ran a blistering 10.9s to upset Joel Gilkes of Josel to win the Boys’ Under-18 100m showdown. Tutorial High School had great representation form Melech Barthon who won the boys’ under-14 100m in 11.5s and the 200m in 24.2s.
Athaleyha Hinckson of North Georgetown Primary had no challenge in winning the Under-12 Girls’ 100-200m sprints while Sophia Primary’s Raphael Archer won the Boys’ Under-12 100m sprint to go along with his triumph in the 1000m middle race. (Calvin Chapman)
