A dangerous perversion

DEAR EDITOR,

Kindly allow this poor man to express his thoughts, which has inundated his thinking for a season. Since the beginning of civilization some men have always been perverse one way or another; some abnormal or unnatural behaviour pattern in human thinking follows them throughout their entire life-time.
It is with a deep concern for this Nation – The Cooperative Republic of Guyana, which I attempt to alert this beautiful nation that God has enrich us in so many ways. Our human resource is the most valuable asset given to us since the time of the first Executive President, LFS Burham.
Our full potential as a nation was never attained, because of our wrong thinking. Distorted and weird thinking has dealt us a serious blow throughout our history. Now, in this dispensation of time and season I have observed that since the introduction of licensed gambling sometime in 2014 [especially Casino gambling, horse-race, lotto, lucky three, match 5 plus bonus, lottery, football and cricket], there has been a serious downside to life’s value. Life is no more measured in moral and spiritual equations. Rather the balance measured in life is gambling. Which is regarded as a dangerous perversion. A perversion so deeply rooted in our culture and DNA it has become chronic. Editor, I recalled not so long ago a compulsive gambler’s house and land was the stakes used, and when the winner showed up to possess the property, his wife was dumb-founded, only to know that this husband, father and friend of gamblers used the property as stakes in a gambling exercise. The trauma of this event was unbearable.
I dare say that sometime ago the Government of the day gambled away the senior citizens’ pension in highly risky transaction [NIS] thus causing a chain reaction within those investments. Editor, I can say much more on this issue of gambling, especially compulsive gambling among business oriented men and women within this nation. The strong pull and influence of gambling is so stubborn that a multitude of fathers and mothers flock these gambling houses daily to d their thing, so to speak, thus leaving hungry children and others with no hope in life. This practice has left many generations without a destiny.
Editor, if the parents of recent graduates of the very eminent and prestigious Law School in Trinidad and Tobago – Chevy Devonish, Frances Carryl, Kristal Abrams Anansa Swain and Michael Monroe, all Guyanese were gamblers, these would have been off-course; destiny would have been lost; stability would be improbable; opportunity would have been wasted.
The course of one’s life and destiny could be seriously affected If gambling becomes a chronic disorder in the mental makeup of many of our most previous assets – human resource.
We need them more than ever before to manage our wealth, as we enter the year 2020. Again, if I may make an analogy, the government of the day brought on an initiative to decree a 2:00am curfew on night clubs and bars. Can the government do something to curb the culture of gambling in the country? I trust that they have a plan.
Finally, if nothing is done within a short period of time the church may very well help equip itself to deal with this most dangerous perversion.
