Secondary School for Yarrowkabra

After years of pleading by residents, the construction of a secondary school in the community of Yarrowkabra along the Soesdyke/Linden Highway is in the making as the Ministry of Education is seeking bids from reputable contractors.
In a notice published in the daily newspapers, the Ministry said that bidding for the construction of the school will be conducted through the National Competitive Bidding (NCB) procedures specified in the Procurement Act 2003 and Regulations 2004.
A bidding security is required for the project and, among other things; all bids must be delivered on or before 09:00hrs on Tuesday, October 29. As it is, the community which has about 800 residents only has a primary school which also serves neighbouring communities.
Works commenced on the school in December 2015 and were completed several months after. The government in its 2018 budget set aside $52.4 billion for the education sector.
Of that sum, $5.4 billion is allocated for the construction, rehabilitation, extension and maintenance of educational facilities across the country. In June, the government commissioned four new schools in Regions Five and Six. These included the Perth Nursery School, Calcutta Nursery School and Champagne Primary School and the No. 36 Primary School.
It was also revealed that the cost to construct the Perth Nursery School was $40M, the Champagne Primary School – $13M and the Calcutta Nursery – $33M.
Last month, it was announced that three schools—a nursery and two primary, are to be constructed in Region 10.
