Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Karen Cummings in her first Annual Coordination Meeting of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) told state members that Guyana will continue to contribute to the funding of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees(UNRWA). Cummings made her statement on Friday in New York at the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
“Guyana remains deeply concerned about the plight of the Palestinian refugees and the difficulties facing UNRWA,” Dr. Cummings stated. “Guyana will continue to contribute to its funding as long as the need exists.”
She added that the agency’s services are crucial to maintaining the human dignity of the refugees and alleviating their suffering.
She added, “At the same, we must continue to encourage the parties to engage in respectful dialogue with a view to a peaceful resolution of this longstanding conflict.”
The Minister explained that the humanitarian catastrophe in Myanmar’s Rakhine state continues to cause immense suffering among significant numbers of Muslims. She referenced that according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), nearly a million Rohingyas had taken refuge in Bangladesh as of March, 2019.
As such, she commended the Government of Bangladesh for extending humanitarian help to the refugees facing the man-made calamity.
Dr. Karen Cummings said that the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration provides a useful framework for the management of international migratory flows and the protection of migrants, especially women and girls, against violence and exploitation at all migration stages.
In addition, she noted the empowerment of women in the Muslim world is welcomed with the emphasis placed at the informal Consultative Ministerial Meeting on Women Empowerment on the role of women combating extremism, women leadership and decision making, the protection of women against all forms of violence, and women economic empowerment and financial inclusion.
Dr Cummings said, “Guyana also acknowledges the important role played by the OIC in development around the world and wishes to express its appreciation for the recent pledge of financial and technical assistance in the critical areas of infrastructure, capacity building and trade.”
UNRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions from UN member states. It provides assistance and protection for approximately 5.5M registered Palestine refugees in order to help them achieve their full potential in human development.
