So a nation that has one of the highest migration rates in the world is complaining about fellow Caribbean brothers and sisters passing through our country on their way to better their lives? All of a sudden, all the folks who have relatives who went back track to the States, to Suriname, to Brazil are horrified by the arrival of around 8,000 Haitians or what is less than 5% of passengers for that time period? Never mind as citizens of a Caricom member state, they are allowed an automatic six month visa. What exactly is the problem here? These poor folks are hurting no one.
As for the Guyana Times, it is disgraceful story of some mythical public health threat these visitors could bring by sharing “communicable and non-communicable diseases” is one of the most racist articles ever to sully that paper’s pages. Jagdeo of course is jumping all over the issue with wild conspiracy theories of Haitians being registered to vote but he cannot provide one shred of evidence. If this is a taste of the election campaign to come then heaven help us because he is leading his PPP/C supporters into a really paranoid place.
May I on behalf of the majority of Guyanese, apologise to the Haitians passing through and wish them thoughts and prayers in their efforts to improve their lives.
.
Yours sincerely
Albert Russell
