Murdered mom, vanished car

At around nine o’clock on the morning of Sunday, May 19, 2019, residents from a new housing scheme in La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, came across a shocking sight. The body of a woman lay face-down in a trench, in a bushy and desolate area. The victim was of East Indian ancestry, and was wearing a pair of blue pants and white top. A pair of slippers lay near the corpse.

Murdered: Jennifer Bipat

Ranks from La Grange Police Station arrived and cordoned off the area. Soon after, a young man also arrived. The distraught youth immediately identified the victim. She was his mother, Jennifer Bipat.
The 48-year-old Bipat was a widow with two children, and resided at Samaroo Dam, Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara. At one time, she had worked as a security guard. A woman working as a security guard is particularly vulnerable at night, and relatives had expressed concern about her safety.
Mrs. Bipat then switched careers and began driving a taxi. Some six months prior to her demise, she bought a Toyota Premio, PXX 4114, and began operating from a Goed Fortuin, West Coast Demerara taxi service.
It is alleged that on the afternoon of Saturday, May 18, at around 04.30 p.m., Mrs. Bipat received a call on her cell phone. The call was reportedly from someone who wished to hire her.

Detectives scour the crime scene

Mrs. Bipat allegedly told the dispatcher that she would not be returning to the base for the rest of the night. She then left.
Seemingly wary about working late into the night, Mrs. Bipat would always return home at around seven in the evening,
When she failed to show up, her daughter, Tharisma Samaroo, became worried. She became even more concerned when her mom failed to answer her phone or respond to messages.
As night fell, the daughter, her brother, an aunt and grandmother contacted ranks at the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station and reported Mrs. Bipat missing.
The following day, they received reports about the discovery of a woman’s body at the back of Dairy, a section of La Parfaite Harmonie. Her 24-year-old son, Deokhan Samaroo, went to the scene and immediately confirmed that the victim was his missing mom.
A post mortem revealed that she had been strangled and struck on the head.
Investigators appear to have not ruled out the possibility that this killing may not be a carjacking.
But could someone have lured or forced Mrs. Bipat to drive to the desolate area where she was found?
It is practically unlikely that the victim would have willingly ventured there.
A resident who spoke with me said that most taxi drivers are reluctant to enter that desolate section of Parfait Harmonie, particularly at sundown.
Another question that some are asking is, if the motive was merely robbery, why would the individual also kill Mrs. Bipat? And did the fact that the victim was beaten and strangled suggest that the ‘carjacker’ did not possess a weapon?
Asked if she had sensed anything unusual in her mom’s behaviour, the daughter, Tharisma Samaroo, says that Mrs. Bipat had left home in a ‘happy’ mood.
She knows of no one who would have wanted to harm her mother, and is pleading for a breakthrough that would lead to the apprehending of her mom’s killer.
“I need justice for my mom. I am asking if they wanted her car, you could have just taken it, why beat her? I am begging the police, and the public, to help us get justice.”
