A postmortem examination conducted yesterday on Travis Joseph, 20, a miner who was found dead in a mining pit in the Ianna Backdam, last Friday drowned.
Government pathologist, Doctor Nehaul Singh concluded that the young man’s cause of death was drowning. The condition leading directly to his death was asphyxiation.
The report also noted that another significant condition leading to his death, was blunt trauma to the head.
This publication understands that Joseph was discovered dead in the mining pit, which is located in the North West District, last Friday.
Family members who spoke to this publication explained that Joseph was a known miner, but last week for the first time he was employed by a city employer.
The man’s mother, Donnette Valmond, told this publication that there’s a number of conflicting reports, which leads her to believe that foul play may have been involved in her son’s death.
Based on one report, it is believed that Joseph went down to the mining pit to wash and he allegedly slipped into the pit. The second report indicated that the now dead man may have jumped into the pit.
Now that the postmortem results are out, family members are demanding that a thorough investigation be conducted to determine the circumstances leading to the young man’s death.
