DEAR EDITOR,
By the beginning of the 1990’s Guyana had been under the PNC Dictatorship for over 26 years when the ABC Countries (America, Britain and Canada), out of compassion for the plight of the Guyanese people, resolved to re-establish Democracy in Guyana.
They took this step primarily to end the suffering of the Guyanese people and bring about a happier country. Also, Guyana had defaulted on its massive debt owed to the ABC countries, directly or indirectly; illegal emigration to North America became uncontrollable; the drug trade took firm roots and was beginning to grow; the Dictatorship prevented any ABC investments; and Guyana became the poorest country in the Hemisphere, even below Haiti. It was only after 1992 when Democracy was restored that profitable ABC investment began to be made in such resources as gold and oil.
In restoring Democracy, the ABC invested massive sums of money and their investment was successful. Democracy was restored and the Guyanese people became happier and had more food; stability and economic development was ushered in; successful action was taken to eliminate the country’s vast debt; and ABC investment continued.
In 2015, with the Democracy re-established by the ABC, the APNU+AFC won the national elections by a majority of one. In 2018 December, they lost a vote of confidence in Parliament but refused to resign as Democracy, the Rule of Law and the Guyana Constitution demanded and began to re-establish what appears to some as the former Dictatorship.
The Caribbean Court of Justice has thrown its weight in favour of Democracy and has demanded the government obey the Constitution and hold free and fair elections. The ABC and the UN office have also called on them to obey the Constitution.
But they are continuing to ignore the ABC who are now in danger of losing the massive investment they made in restoring Democracy.
The government seem bent on establishing an unstable Dictatorship which in the final analysis, would militate against both ABC investment as well as local private sector and again throw Guyanese into the pit of poverty and suffering.
The ABC could defend their investment in Democracy and save the day by ensuring that the Constitution is obeyed and quick elections are held and once again save Guyana from a long night of suffering. Guyanese people would be eternally grateful for such help.
