Mason charged for feeding one year old ganja in tea

Twenty-seven-year-old Keon Granville was yesterday fined and sentenced to community service after he admitted that he would normally boil marijuana and make tea for his one-year-old nephew to drink.
It was alleged that on June 7, 2019 at Phase 1 East Ruimveldt, Granville had in his possession two grams of the drug.
He was brought before the Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Granville when given a chance to address the court said that he would normally boil the marijuana and make tea for his nephew to drink as the child’s first meal for the day.
He added that his nephew suffers from a severe respiratory problem and since he started giving the child the ganja tea, his breathing has improved.
Police prosecutor Adduni Inniss stated that on the day in question, police ranks went to the home of the accused and identified themselves. They then conducted a search of the home in Granville’s presence and the suspected narcotic was found.
The accused was shown the cannabis and under caution, he admitted ownership of same. He was then arrested and taken into police custody where he was charged for the offence.
In handing down her sentence, the magistrate told the accused that he should not play a pediatrician and make diagnosis if he is not certified.
“It is not healthy to give a child narcotic. Rather you need to take him to see a doctor for his ailment.”
Granville was fined $10,000 and sentenced to eight weeks of community service. He was also instructed to attend three counselling sessions.
Meanwhile, Dennis Nunes, a 50-year-old labourer of Lot 34 D’Urban Street, Georgetown, was remanded to prison after he was found with three kilos of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
He denied the charge, which alleged that on Friday at his home, he was found with 605 grams for the purpose of trafficking.
Prosecutor Inniss objected to bail based on the seriousness and prevalence of the offence. She stated that the cannabis was allegedly found in the defendant’s room in a barrel. The prosecutor’s objection was upheld and the matter was adjourned to June 19, 2019.
