Miner freed in Sand Hill stabbing death

A 25-year-old miner walked free of a murder charge yesterday, since there was insufficient evidence to build a case against him.
The 25-year-old accused, who was identified as Jumar Ralph, was arraigned before the Suddie High Court before judge Nareshwar Harnanan, for murder committed on 35-year-old Richard Culpepper.
The court heard that the killing occurred on Sunday October 2, 2016, about 10:10 pm at Sand Hill landing, Cuyuni River, Essequibo.
The accused and Culpepper were in a fight, during which Ralph reportedly stabbed Culpepper. He claimed he had earlier received kicks and punches from the deceased.
Culpepper died from perforation of the heart due to a stab wound.
Ralph was represented by attorney at law Lachmi Dindyal who made a no-case submission based on the fact that there was a lack of sufficient evidence against the accused.
This publication understands that the only evidence in the matter was the caution statement. The caution statement, however, only gives rise to the accused acting in self-defense and provocation.
The attorney’s application was carried by justice Harnanan, who directed the 12-member jury to deliver a formal verdict of not guilty.
