In commemoration of Guyana’s 53rd Independence celebrations, the commissioners and staff of the Rights of the Child Commission (RCC) hosted its fourth annual Child Rights and Independence Workshop at the Pegasus Hotel last Thursday.
Special invitees included Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, Minister within the Ministry of Indigenous Affairs, Valerie Garrido- Lowe, and Chairperson of the RCC, Aleema Nasir.
The aim of this workshop was to engage multiple discussions with children and youth. It also focused on the history and significance of Independence. The RCC’s programme also aimed on realising, promoting and enlivening independence and human rights of the children of Guyana.
Protection
Chairperson Aleema Nasir related that the RCC has partnered with the Guyana Police Force and the Health Sector on ensuring that the rights of children are “activated and availed.”
She noted that goal is in pursuance of ridding society of all abuse and neglect that is constantly hindering the performance of the youths in Guyana.
The Commission recently hosted a workshop with doctors and nurses of the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital.
Its purpose was to educate participants on the articles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. That workshop uncovered that children in Region 6 still suffer from malnutrition.
Education
The Ministry of Education is considered as one of the principal partners of the RCC. That partnership is to ensure that the settings and conditions in which children are being educated are accorded with the best practices. That endeavour has not been limited to the coastland, but has a strong focus on the hinterland areas.
The RCC has stressed on numerous occasions that schools with dormitories within the hinterlands must always represent safe places for children to receive their education. Recent reports of lapses and deteriorating conditions at schools with dormitories in Potaro- Siparuni, Region 8 are being reviewed.
The RCC takes pride in championing the complete elimination of corporal punishment in the schools around Guyana. This is done in order of keeping up with international best practices.
Recent sessions with teachers from Port Kaituma and Kwakwani have established that those teachers are still working in burdensome conditions.
Empowerment
The RCC’s Youth Empowerment Workshop in secondary schools has sought to produce and promote leadership roles by children and youth. The most recent workshop that was held at the St. Ignatius, Christainburg-Wismar and Kwakwani Secondary Schools, within Regions 9 and 10, have refreshed and reinforced faiths and beliefs in the capacity of the youths of Guyana.
