The Independence Flag Raising Ceremony of the Pomeroon-Supenaam Region was held at the Regional Administration building beginning at 8:00 hours yesterday.
Patriotism filled the atmosphere where some three hundred persons, of all ages and from all walks of life, participated in this activity that honours their land.
Staff members from the Regional Administration, students from Essequibo Technical Institute and Anna Regina Secondary, all added to the colourful event. Members of the Guyana Police Force, Guyana National Cadets Corps, Cotton Field Secondary School, Guyana Defence Force, Guyana Fire Service and Guyana People’s Militia looked smart in their uniforms as they marched exquisitely.
The ceremony featured great flare. It included speeches and cultural items such as songs, steel pan renditions, dances and poetry reflecting our beautiful and Independent country. The ceremony commenced with the march past, followed by the hoisting of the Golden Arrowhead, recital of the National Pledge and singing of the National Anthem.
Keynote speaker, Regional Executive Officer, Denis Jaikaran chose four outstanding Essequibians to stand beside him and extend greetings. They were; Veteran Doreen Duncan, RDC Councillor Samad Baksh, Social Cohesion Officer Audrey Garraway and Representative of the Business Community, Dileep Singh.
REO Jaikaran commended the Cotton Field Secondary School, Guyana National Cadets Corps and others for their participation the activity. He also commended the staff and planners of the auspicious activity.
