GRO takes services to riverine communities

The General Registrar’s Office took several of its services to riverine communities in the Essequibo.

The outreach started during the weekend and has seen a large number of persons being registered for the very first time.
The outreach came after repeated pleas by residents in the various communities including Bonasika, Leguan, Fort Island, Wakenaam and Morashee, asking that they be visited and serviced.
A number of persons also sought to renew their birth certificates and gain information on other GRO services such as death and marriage registrations.
The initiative was a result of Region Three Regional Executive Officer Jennifer Ferreira-Dougall’s engagement with the various communities.
The REO made representation on the residents’ behalf to the Department of Citizenship within the Ministry of the Presidency.
Dougall noted that a birth certificate is the first important document that is necessary and from that the others will follow.
So it is not just about knowing your identity but also enabling you to conduct business in your country of birth hence empowering you.
The outreach will continue to see that unmet needs are met. Other areas to be visited are the Great Troolie Islands, Lanaballi, Saxacalli and Karia Karia amongst others.
