Free education can now become a reality

DEAR EDITOR,

I support the call for free education at all tiers of the education system, from nursery to university. Now that the country will benefit substantially from more revenues from oil and gas, free education can now become a reality.
It is an established fact that education is the key to development, both at the individual and at the national level. As such, there is no better way of utilizing our oil revenues than to put more resources in the development of our social capital.
The quality and relevance of education in a changing Guyana should also be re-visited. Education should not only result in cognitive development but also, and perhaps more importantly, in the spiritual and cultural upliftment of individuals and by extension society as a whole.
I am one of those who benefitted from free university education at a time when the economy was doing much worse than today and when there were no prospects of oil and gas. Many of us from humble backgrounds managed to work our way through education and contribute to the development of this beautiful country in ways not otherwise possible.
Education should not be seen as an expenditure item but as an investment in the country’s future. In fact, the main contributory factor to the economic progress in several of the Asian economies was investment in the country’s human resources. Today, these countries are reaping strong economic and social dividends from the investments made despite comparatively little natural and mineral resources.
Let us put more money in human development. In the final analysis, it is people and their material and cultural advancement that really matters.
