Despite the ruling of Chief Justice Roxanne George upholding the no confidence motion passed in Parliament on December 21, it seems as if the David Granger administration is bent on prolonging elections as long as possible. There is no move by the Elections Commission to set up the machinery for the polling. However, the Coalition has shown a little sign of preparation by setting up a Campaign Committee last Friday. But it is unbelievable that they have not yet identified someone for the No. 2 position, the Prime Ministerial candidate. Even the PPP, which is advocating for the March 21 date be kept has not named a candidate for PM. and the Presidential nominee is under fire for the 19 criminal charges he is facing. He has been barred from entering Canada and it is not wise for Jagdeo to persist for the former Housing Minister to be at the helm.
President David Granger ignored the names of the 18 candidates submitted by the Opposition leader in three lists, and appointed someone of his choice; 84 year old retired Guyanese born, but Grenadian judge James Patterson, who became ill shortly after and was unable to perform his duties.
Guyana seems to operate different from other Caricom and Commonwealth countries. There is little transparency both in government as well as the opposition PPP since there are allegations that Jagdeo manipulated the 35 Committee members for them to choose Irfaan Ali who is not as brilliant as Anil Nandlall or Dr. Frank Anthony, apart from the large number of criminal charges he is facing.
There are reports that the voters list needs to be revised, but I cannot understand why the list would be outdated when Local Government elections were held recently. Guyanese have to change their attitude – they have to move away from racial politics, which is the root of the conflict.
It is very unfortunate that it is so deep rooted. After so many decades, it still exists and there is no indication of a change. Not all the PPP and PNC members are racial, but most of them are and they favour persons of their ethnicity. Guyana needs a new breed of politicians – young ones with a completely different outlook- but with oil in the horizon this is not likely in the next two or three decades. Guyana needs divine intervention for a change
Yours respectfully,
Oscar Ramjeet
