Dear Editor,
The newborn baby (2019) has arrived and already the critical diaper change is needed. As I read the recent article in your newspaper about top promotions (not police) in Guyana, I am once more convinced that I should accept the challenge thrown out by my government (post 2015 elections) to hold their political feet to the fire whenever the time should arise. Being now retired, I have the time to do so as a concerned Guyanese citizen.
Throughout my working life, I have regarded promotion as a reward for work well done. I have however, noticed some people being rewarded in Guyana generally for inconsistent behaviour as it relates to the use of one’s office. Now, sadly, once again the same thing has risen like a “political phoenix from the ashes” in my beloved country and I was blindsided after reading the list of names thrice.
I am aware that there are “advisors” to the President and Ministers and therein lies my problem. As a consequence, two questions have arisen.
1, Are these “advisors” to the President and Ministers of my government qualified enough to give reasonable and appropriate advice?
2. Is there any “political” adult at the table when the decisions are made for onward transmission to the President and his Ministers?

It appears to me that memory loss is alive and well now in the corridors of power in Guyana. I can vividly remember when one of the newly promoted had (pre 2015) demanded the sacking of an employee at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport because he, during the course of his duty, checked the bags of the newly promoted person’s family member who was an outgoing passenger.
It was a clear case of misuse of authority and that is only one of several instances, but we sometimes only read the large print of these issues. The large print would however indicate the consequences of such action. The employee would have been placed on the breadline, his family affected and he would have had a torrid time getting employment in the country (pre 2015).These kinds of behaviour should never be condoned, much less rewarded with promotion. What kind of message is being sent to young aspirants of the public service? As I sit here with a darkening political cloud hovering over me, I remember Julius Caesar, who, being mortally wounded by his surrogate Brutus, his lifeblood seeping into the sands of Rome, which he so dearly loved, looking Brutus in the eye and asking “you too Brutus?”.
The barbarians are at the gate and it needs urgent reinforcing. Those who have ears to hear let them hear…
