Minister of Communities, Ronald Bulkan, was among those who spent Christmas Day with the residents of Dharm Shala Complex at Albouystown, Georgetown.
At the event, a luncheon hosted by the Home for the Less Fortunate, Bulkan paid homage to the Late Harry Ramsaroop. He spoke of how Ramsaroop committed to the construction of 11 Dharm Shala buildings between 1952 and 1960.
Pandit Ramsaroop, according to Bulkan, was also able to resurrect and rebuild a modern Dharm Shala “which probably would have disappeared from the Guyana landscape on the death of the founder in 1950.
Bulkan said that Harry Ramsaroop served the poor and less fortunate until he died in 2013.
The Minister revered Ramsaroop as a man who will always be remembered with appreciation and gratitude for “his commitment to the betterment of life for the unfortunates of Guyanese society.”
Ramsaroop’s eldest daughter, Kella, is now the managing director of the Dharm Shala.
‘Dharm Shala’ is Hindi for “Spiritual Dwelling” or, more loosely, “sanctuary”. The Dharm Shalas are regarded as the home of benevolence for all races. The charitable institution has been serving the needy for nearly 100 years.
