Permit me a space to express my dissatisfaction on an issue that is bothering me and my family members. Before local government elections a female candidate of the PPP, Ms. Megan Thomas, has been having some personal issues with my aunt, Ms. Grace Atkinson, a well-known business woman of Lethem.
On numerous occasions Ms Thomas met and threatened this woman and verbally abused her in the public. She even told her she will hit her down with her car and kill her. These matters were all reported to the Lethem Police Station.
This lady was warned by the Lethem police officers. After Local Government elections this woman was elected to be a councilor on the Lethem Town Council. A few days later she met my aunt who was shopping at a store and verbally abused her. She also assaulted my aunt and caused bodily harm.
They were brought before the Lethem Magistrate’s Court where the magistrate sided with Thomas although my aunt tried to explain to him that this was not the first time they had a confrontation. My aunt even tried to show him the marks on her body. She also expressed to the magistrate that she is fearful for her life.
The magistrate told her all the reports were with the police, and she should find out what they did with such reports. He put them on the bond to keep the peace.
What is most bothering to me Mr. Editor, is that this same PPP councilor will soon be swearing in and taking an oath. Is this the kind of woman the PPP wants to represent the municipality of Lethem?
Thomas proudly says that the magistrate is her friend and he would not go against her. My aunt now suffers from severe headaches and blurred vision after the assault while this PPP Councilor roams free.
The PPP is not in power as yet and is already started condoning their councilors to abuse women. What else will they condone seeing that they have not taken office as yet in the township?
Concerned and upset,
Selvia Atkinson
