A smaller-sized, three-estate Guyana Sugar Corporation Inc. (GuySuCo) is poised to achieve its production target for the year 2018,, which is 103,000 tonnes of sugar.
As of yesterday, December 12, 2018, 100,485 tonnes of sugar has been produced for the year.
This is in excess of 12,000 tonnes more than what was achieved for the entire year, 2017, from the three estates – Albion, Blairmont and Uitvlugt, the corporation said yesterday.
Thus far, the three estates have collectively surpassed their weekly targets on 26 occasions for the year which translates to payment of Weekly Production Incentive (WPI).
“The qualified employees will therefore receive a bonus for the year 2018, as a reward for their performance and the value of which would be dependent on the final production.”
The Corporation thanked all employees for “remaining focused on the task at hand and delivering a successful target”. With a few weeks left for the second crop, GuySuCo encouraged employees to “maintain the team spirit” and managers to “continue to show strong leadership and management in 2019”.
Government has separated three estates – Skeldon, Enmore and Rose Hall – and has placed them up for privatization and divestment. The industry has been on a downward slide for the last decade, with the Coalition Government signaling its intentions for an overhaul.
Sugar has dropped to below US$300 per tonne, with local production costing almost three times the amount it is being sold for on the overseas market.
