December which happens to be “Road Safety Month” started with two road fatalities. The first death resulted from an accident that occurred yesterday, on the Danzie Public Road, Mahaicony, around 14:00 hours. A cyclist was killed on the spot after he was hit by a Pick-up.
The other occurred on the Bagotstown Public Road, East Bank Demerara, around 19:15 hours, when a 45-year-old woman was crushed by a truck. She too died.
Muneshwar Narine, 65, of Supply, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, was struck down by a motor pick-up with registration plates PNN 8778. It was driven by a resident of #53 Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
Police in a statement claimed the driver of the pickup was proceeding east along the northern carriageway of the road when the driver alleged that the cyclist who was riding in front of him, suddenly swerved into his path. The cyclist was rushed to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital by ambulance but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver was given a breathalyzer test which he subsequently passed. He remains in custody and is assisting police with their investigation.
One resident said, “That pick-up had to be going with a lot of speed, because if you see where the man get hit and where he end up, you would realize it was a hard impact.”
The second road fatality involved a woman only identified as Shondell. Her head was crushed on the Bagotstown Public Road after she was run over by a truck laden with rice and heading to Georgetown.
When Kaieteur News crime reporter arrived on the scene, the police were wrapping up their investigations while the woman’s body lay on the roadway covered with a tarpaulin.
She was said to have just left a shop on the western side of the East Bank Demerara Public Road when she was crushed by the truck.
Some persons who claim to be the woman’s relatives were at the scene. They would only say the woman worked with National Hardware.
The relatives said she had no children. The bread, eggs and sugar on the road beside the woman’s body confirmed that she went to the shop. What was evident ,is that if the woman had used the overpass that Government had built to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars to ensure citizens safety, she would have been alive today.
The truck driver claimed he only knew that he hit something after feeling the trucks rear wheel rolling over something.
He stopped to investigate and noticed the woman lying on the road, seemingly dead, the driver told police.

(Kaieteur News) – There was a time when things were used as they were intended. A fork for eating and a bed for sleeping.
