As the murder trial of Phileman Budhoo, called Kevin, 22, of No 63 village Corentyne, Berbice, continues in the Berbice High Court two more witnesses took the witness stand.
Budhoo, who is accused of murdering Mohamed Fizal Mahmood Baksh, called ‘Sugar Cake’, a money changer, of No 63 village Corentyne, Berbice is on trial before Justice Priya Sewnarine Beharry and a mixed jury.
The incident is alleged to have occurred between December 21 and December 24, 2015 at the No 63 Beach, Corentyne, Berbice.
The accused is being represented by attorney at law Mursalene Bacchus in association with attorneys at law, Arudranauth Gossai and Surihya Sabsook.
Attorney at law Mandel Moore is prosecuting the state’s case.
Taking the witness stand on Monday were Government Pathologist Dr. Vivekanand Brijmohan and Police Sergeant Poonan Ibaran.
Dr. Brijmohan in his testimony recalled performing a post mortem examination on the body of Baksh. The cause of death was given as shock and haemorrhage due to a fractured skull.
The post mortem examination on the body was conducted where it was found at the No 63 Beach due to its decomposed state.
The victim was reportedly fully clothed, and the back of his skull had been fractured in two places. There was also a wound on one of his legs.
Sergeant Ibaran, during his testimony, tendered a parcel with a piece of wood which was allegedly said to be the murder weapon. He testified that the piece of wood was lodged by another police officer who was part of the investigation.
The prosecution is contending that the accused had made some arrangements with Baksh about some financial transaction to be done with some other persons. The accused subsequently picked up Baksh with a car that he had rented from car rental service and took him to the No 63 Beach where he robbed and killed him.
Baksh’s body was discovered in a bushy section of the No. 63 Village, Corentyne foreshore, three days after he was reported missing.
The accused had reportedly fled the country.
Testifying earlier were Jagwanti Munir, the wife of the deceased; Fareena Hussein, the wife of the owner of the car rental service; and Rohan Karim a worker at the car rental service.
Police had found a wristwatch, a calculator and phone among other things at the scene.
Kaieteur News understands that the corpse was beginning to decompose, and this indicated that Baksh, 56, known as ‘Sugar Cake,’ had been dead for at least 48 hrs.
He is believed to have been clubbed to death with a piece of wood, which detectives found nearby.
