First past the post winner for Constituency #1 in the Georgetown Local Government area, Pandit Ubraj Narine is among the possible candidates being considered as a replacement for Patricia Chase-Green for City Mayor, a source attached to the People’s National Congress has confirmed.
The source noted that the Party is looking to take a more fresh and youthful approach to local governance. As part of the strategy, the source explained that party is looking for a new Mayor who will have to be someone to represent that.
The source noted too that although she will not return as Mayor, Chase- Green remains a strong member of the party and she will have a big role at the Council.
“However the two top positions must represent a new start,” the source added.
Meanwhile Kaieteur News understands that the new Mayoral Candidate, Pandit Narine is the grandson of PNC/ R Member of Parliament for the People’s National Congress Preetam Singh.
Another candidate being considered for the top post in the Council is First time candidate who contested under the APNU, Denroy Tudor.
Patricia Chase-Green’s stint as Mayor and the overall management of the APNU-dominated City Council has attracted sharp criticisms from citizens.
Following the recently held elections, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) regained control of Georgetown, despite losing ground to the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) at the Local Government Elections (LGE).
Party chairperson and Minister of Public Health, Volda Lawrence, noted that the PNC/R, the largest party in the APNU, secured 21 seats on the 30-member council; PPP, seven seats; and Alliance for Change (AFC), two seats.
Lawrence had noted that there are no formal discussions on whether the party has plans to have Chase-Green, who won her Constituency comprehensively, re-elected Mayor.
“We have not discussed that but I am quite certain that when we do and we decide on who we would like to be the Mayor, all Georgetown will be pleased,” Lawrence said.
She added, “Each and every one of our candidates is eligible to be the Mayor.”
