The Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) in response to the sinking of a North West cargo boat is expected to send out a team to Region One this week, to ascertain the cause of the incident. The vessel, Miss Shivita II, is registered with MARAD, and is owned by Vijaimatie Balak, of Cane Grove, East Coast Demerara.
According to MARAD, Miss Shivita II currently lays at Latitude 8 degrees, 26.645 North and Longitude 59 degrees, and 48.323 west on the Waini River.
It is alleged that the boat capsized due to strong winds that caused it to drift off course while entering the channel of the Waini River.
According to officials, the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard responded to a distress call, which was received at around 04:00 hrs on Sunday.
The vessel, which was transporting goods from Georgetown to Mabaruma and Port Kaituma was said to have been captained by Rupert Patterson of the Linden/Soesdyke Highway. The captain and crew of the steel hull were rescued. Losses have been estimated in the millions.
