Williams and Tyrell reset 10k records
“The pinnacle of the schools’ sporting calendar”, as described by Minister of Education, Nicolette Henry who declared the 58th National Schools Swimming, Cycling and Athletics Championship opened yesterday at the National Track and Field Facility(NTFC), Leonora, is set for six days of thrilling battle between the 15 districts for top honours.
Henry called for sportsmanship and fair play amongst the student athletes while encouraging them to foster new relationships with each other during her address. She also paid tribute to the sterling work of the organisers, Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) and hardworking staff of the Ministry of Education (MOE) during her speech.
In recent years, the battle has been between the reigning champions; district 10 (Upper Demerara, Upper Berbice) and district 11 (North Georgetown) but South Georgetown (district 13) who finished second last year has proven that they will be a contender for the title in 2018.
Come this Friday, when the competition concludes, a close finish will be expected between the three top districts. However, North Georgetown and the defending champions are off a good start after registering victories in the initial race of the day, the 10k.
Defending his title was North Georgetown’s Rekie Williams who finished in an impressive time of 34 minutes 55 seconds, while Sheama Tyrell of district 10 was the first female to cross the finish line with a time of 42 minutes 07 seconds. Both time were recorded as new records.
Marcia Andrews (46m:29s) of district nine and Lea Harris (48m:18s) of District One snared silver and bronze respectively for the females, while Darel Davis (district six) and Morvin Hamilton of district five were second and third behind Williams, respectively. Davis ran a time of 35 minutes and 54 seconds, while Hamilton crossed the line 19 seconds later.
Today, the one-day Swimming Championships will splash away at the National Aquatic Center from 10:00hrs, while the one-day Cycling Championship will pedal off concurrently at the National Park.
The track and field championship will resume after today’s break at the NTFC from tomorrow to Friday.
