Are we reading the political signs in Guyana correctly?

As a concerned Guyanese, it was with no surprise when I read the Local Government Election s (LGE) results, which indicated a poor showing by both the PNC/R and the AFC. I question myself to determine if after three years in Government, is this situation now in reverse?
It will be remissed of me not to mention that my opinion is based upon my right to hold the “collective feet” of my Government to the fire in order for them to awaken from their political slumber and improve on their delivery to the citizens of Guyana. On the last election day, I noticed a very poor turnout for the two Government side parties. Is this because their supporters believed it was not important to vote or is it really that they feel disenchanted? I took note of the Disciplined Services voter turnout, which concretizes my belief that all is not well as we think it should be.
What is really wrong here? There is an important election and apparently nobody cares.
I am awaiting the Finance Minister’s approach towards the suffering NIS pensioners who have worked and struggled to pay their NIS from their first working day only to be given a paltry sum of less than US$200 a month. How much more callous can they be treated? Is there no one with conscience enough to stand up and say that it is wrong? A nation is judged by the way it treats its elderly and we should be cognizant of that fact at all times.
We must be seen as doing better things for all of Guyana. This is no time for fancy political footwork and shadow boxing. The LGE results are a serious indictment to the Government parties and their performance therein. Get on the ground, meet with your people, let them be satisfied that you are working for them. Let us not be like Emperor Nero who sat fiddling whilst Rome burnt.
The year 2020 is on the horizon and disenchanted people will have their say then. Can my Government afford to take that chance? It will be one of the most historical years for Guyana, too much is at stake.
While awaiting the reading of the 2019 budget, my gut feeling signals that I should not hold my breath for it is said, “He who never expects is never disappointed.”
