“Do suh nah like suh”

DEAR EDITOR,
I like using my Guyanese proverbs intermittently, because they succinctly explain the issue under review as no other language form could. Try as I would using the English diction in many instances, and the true meaning of what I really want to say is masked. The expression of the true description that you want to put forth is lost, hence I have no choice but to revert back to the good old Guyanese proverb to lend that emphatic explanation as no other language usage could. In this regard, I have captioned my discourse today “duh suh nah like suh” in the recent no-confidence motion filed by The Opposition.
The PPP/C under the guidance of its Leader Dr Bharrat Jagdeo has tabled a no confidence motion in parliament quoting many instances of government’s gross mismanagement of the economy and also their blatant disregard for the rule of law. The Opposition Leader has quoted a litany of woes to this effect with solid backing from the Auditor General’s Report on the conduct of the government. So, these are not idle allegations as Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo surmises.
The Prime Minister, instead of allowing the matter to be dealt with in parliament, has – in his usual slippery style – gone to the media wailing that the Opposition Leader has brought this motion against President Granger at a time when he is very ill and incapacitated.
Nagamootoo in his usual deceptive role is desperately trying to evade the issue by trying a ruse to lead people away from the real issues. The Opposition Leader was highlighting to the public an indictment on a government that has done practically nothing but enriched themselves while pauperizing its subjects.
Try convincing anyone why a government more than three-fifths into its period of governance, who cannot complete a single major project, while at the same time taxing every facet out of its citizens, should not face a no confidence vote? Try telling the Guyanese people that! No wonder the people voted overwhelmingly on the side of the Opposition; they were unquestioningly telling the government we have no confidence in you and in that regard want you out! The last LGE results is enough of an indictment on the Coalition.
The handwriting is on the wall for the Coalition, hence the abrupt suspension of parliament last week, because had that matter been sent to a vote, the Coalition would have certainly seen defeat.
Nagamootoo, knowledgeable of this fact, went on a media blitz to try to shore up sympathies for his beleaguered government while showing a picture of AFC/APNU unity. Even that photograph spoke a million words. Where were the little minnow parties that make up the Coalition, like the WPA? Where was the WPA? Without the WPA’s vote, the Coalition would be defeated and must call an election.
The point is this Mr Nagamootoo must refresh his memory with their performance in the opposition and the no confidence brought against Mr Ramotar’s Government. At that time Nagamootoo and friends were sailing on a sea of lies of corruption and mismanagement by the PPP/C.
Nagamootoo and Granger smelt blood and they pressed the issue to the max. Mr Ramotar faced with a stubborn and unforgiving opposition called an election that resulted in defeat, so, why should Nagamootoo run and wail now when faced with similar no confidence? I would calmly ask him to stand like a man and face the music, “duh so nah like so.”
Firstly, I must say we in the PPP/C did not bring illness on the President. In fact we sympathize with him and wish him all the best. It is a shame that the Prime Minister of all persons should make that low remark.
On the other hand, we in the Opposition are deeply concerned about all of these damning accusations and reports about the Coalition while the president was in better health and had all the means of consultation (even from the Opposition) at his disposal to clear these up. However, over the years what we witnessed was a blunt refusal to listen or consult with anyone. So, we have no recourse but to resort a no-confidence motion which we hope might force the Government to listen.
An Opposition that is deeply respectful of the People to whom we pledge our allegiance, must force government to account for its actions, there is no middle ground here.
