Dear Editor,
I watched and waited with bated breath for additional news on the fate of the passengers on that Boeing 757 jet that crash landed at The Cheddi Jagan International Airport Timehri. I was anxious to know what had become of the more than one hundred passengers and crew members; if they were alright, or if there were any injuries and of course fearing the worse if there were any major casualties. Thankfully the worst case scenario had been averted and no major harm had come to those on board.
We sighed in relief that the danger has passed, and all were safe from any major harm. We now await the investigation into the requisite cause for the crash landing, as well as other matters such as the mechanical report that would soon come in due course of time.
Now, when we thought the danger had passed and things would return to normalcy, we then woke up to the most degrading and shameful news that the firefighters were engaged in wholesale theft of passengers as well as crew members’ belongings. This is the most despicable news to have hit international headlines in recent times.
Our Firefighters, persons who are supposed to be men and women of valour who are expected to show heroic and exemplary behaviour were the ones carrying out these dastardly acts of barefaced “thiefing.” It is appalling to say the least the way Guyana and Guyanese would be viewed from now on.
The Kaieteur News Cartoon carries the caricature of a hyena scavenging through the lot of the passengers. However, I would like to use the Guyanese terminology of “these Carrion Crows” for firefighters who could not wait to get their claws on the people’s goods, makes us believe that this is not the first of its kind. Shame on you!
I would go on to use another Guyanese proverb “dag a custom to suck egg can’t leff off.” These shameless firefighters chose this an opportune time to practise their nefarious trade now to the open world. What a shame! What a disgrace!
Last Saturday, there was a “march for Jesus” held in Georgetown, which was largely made up of members of the ruling elite PNC Cabal. It begs the question whether this march was really a religious event or a political gimmick coming largely on the eve of Local Government Elections.
What I would suggest to The PNC is to hold another march and highlight as its slogan God protect us from the thieves and violent people and pray for the return of our country to true godliness and morality.
This I believe would have a more lasting appeal to The Higher Powers in heaven to somehow bring us relief from the stranglehold of lawlessness that prevails.
