Annai Primary School children begin Stem Club Activities

The Office of The First Lady of Guyana in collaboration with ExxonMobil, Iwokarama and STEMGuyana, yesterday saw students from Annai Primary school begin their STEM club activities.
A STEM club is a gathering of young people that finds an enjoyable way to engage in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, hence the name STEM.
Yesterday’s activities included robot building and programming with robot kits donated by ExxonMobil. STEMGuyana intends to make weekly lesson plans available to Annai students and all STEM clubs in the nationwide programme.
Lesson plans will include concepts like Levers, Pulleys, the brain of the robot, how remote control systems work, the history of robots, how robots are powered, IR sensors, the principle of light, the transformation of energy and many other topics. Students will also learn to code using Scratch programming, which will strengthen their Maths fundamental skills.
STEMGuyana co-founder, Karen Abrams, said, “Our goals is to build and strengthen the technical skills of our club members, while also strengthening their soft skills like collaboration, cooperation, communication, problem solving and critical thinking”
Annai is a small village in the Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo Region of Guyana. It is nestled in the foothills of the Pakaraima Mountains and is close to the Rupununi River.
