Days after he was allegedly caught on CCTV footage viciously assaulting a disabled man, Campbellville businessman Abdul Imran Khan was yesterday remanded to prison on an attempted murder charge.
Thirty-one-year-old Khan, of 11 Austin Street, Campbellville, was charged for attempting to kill Romario Balget outside the Palm Court nightclub.
It is alleged that on October 28, last at Main Street, Georgetown, with intent to commit murder, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Romario Balget.
Khan was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge after it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Attorney-at-Law Glen Hanoman in an attempt to secure bail for his client told the court that Khan is the owner of a construction company and has never been charged before.
However, Police Prosecutor Simone Payne stated that on the day in question around 02:00 hrs, the victim went to the Palm Court night club on Main Street where he and his friends spent an hour.
The court heard that as Balget and his friends were about to leave the nightclub, Khan and some other males were standing at the gateway and as a result Balget and his friends walked between Khan and his friends.
The court heard that Khan became annoyed and dealt Balget several punches to his head and face, causing him to sustain injuries.
Khan then allegedly continued to cuff and kick Balget while Balget was lying on the ground in an unconscious state. He then picked up a bottle and slashed Balget across the right side of his face.
The injured man was then rushed to the Woodlands Hospital where he underwent two emergency surgeries. The Prosecutor added that Balget is still a patient at the institution where he is expected to undergo more corrective surgery to his face.
The matter was then reported and Khan was arrested and charged.
Prosecutor Payne made serious objections to bail, citing the serious nature of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts.
Hanoman in response, told the court that the ‘so called victim’ was discharged from the hospital and was happily at the Brickdam Police Station where he gave them a statement in the matter.
The lawyer added that the ‘so called victim’ voluntarily checked himself back into the institution so that the court can charge his client with attempted murder.
Hanoman added that he is unclear what is the motive behind the police instituting a attempted murder charge against his client citing that it was just a simple fight between two men.
The Chief Magistrate then remanded Khan to prison citing public safety.
She instructed the accused to make his next court appearance on November 19..
