Dear Editor,
Permit me a space in your newspapers to pen my utter disgust at this unnecessary controversy, that’s emerging based on the steep increases for the rates crossing the seventh longest floating bridge in the world.
China opened the longest river bridge in the world to connect the mainland to Hong Kong and Macau.
The naysayers are saying this is another step by president Xi Xingping to take full control of Hong Kong. Nevertheless, I am forced to make some comparable analysis and as such, Minister Patterson has assumed control of this situation that is designed to harm the APNU and AFC at the upcoming Local Government Elections.
Our bridge is exactly 1,570m that is equivalent to 0.977 miles; China’s bridge is 34 miles. Brace yourself for some prices that will leave you speechless.
To cross this bridge, a driver will have to pay $8 – $10US and would be restricted to 300 persons per day unless special or permanent permits are assigned.
If math serves me correct, $205 * $8US = $1640 * 300 = $492,000.00 daily at an average as compared to $12000 * 100 = 1,200,000.00.
Could this be right to tell the populace this bridge is not profitable? That is rank absurdity.
This forces me back to the 1980s. I was a schoolboy at Corriverton Primary and my dad, a GRDB employee was conversing with my mother. He stopped whilst listening to the lunchtime news. Then he said listen, listen, ‘ YESU PERSAUD IS NO LONGER THE CHAIRMAN OF SAPIL AND ALL OTHER BOARDS AS OF THIS MOMENT.
President Hoyte had the testicular apparatus to make such bold moves when an individual betrayed the trust of the commander in chief.
What are we doing with the Berbice River Bridge Chairman, or he is too big to be replaced.
The mere thought of him having a press conference to announce these increases is blatant disrespect to this government. To compound the issue, he tried at every instance to justify his actions and by extension the board he heads, saying ‘this is a private entity. Come November 12, 2018 those increases will be implemented’.
I call on the President, Minister of State and Minister of Public Infrastructure to act decisively to avoid an imminent catastrophe come November 12 with your Berbice supporters.
Sincerely yours,
Ronald Shepherd
