Dear Editor,
Public opinion is growing that the DPP, Ms. Shalimar Hack, is not a wise choice to be appointed a Judge of the High Court or the Court of Appeals, nor even continue to be DPP or otherwise. In fact, there is precedent that she should practice at the lucrative private bar, like more accomplished DPPs, Police Legal Advisors and Senior State counsels have done in the past. Mr. Doodnath Singh, Mr. George Jackman, Mr. Albert Baldeo, Mr. Khemraj Ramjattan, and Mr. Sheik Insanally are only a few who successfully took that route. Others like Justices George Pompey, Joaquin Gonsalves-Sabola, and J.O.F. Haynes made transitions from State Counsels and private practitioners to Judges.
The crime rate in any country has a proportional relationship to the work ethic, or lack thereof, of its DPP and staff. This is the gravest indictment against Ms. Shalimar Hack. She has outlived her usefulness in that faltering office. However, the solution is not to promote her to any type of Judgeship. Level the playing field, and secure new blood in the DPP’s office.
