Security guard, Eon Archibald, 43, of East La Penitence, Georgetown was yesterday jailed for five years, for almost fatally chopping a bar worker he had accused of having an affair with his wife.
After repeatedly apologizing to the victim Dwayne Wallace also known as “Country”, Archibald offered compensation of $300,000.
Wallace, however, told the court that although he accepted the compensation, he did not accept the apology since he almost lost his life.
Late September, an unrepresented Archibald was brought before Justice Sandil Kissoon at the High Court in Georgetown, where he denied an attempted murder charge.
In light of this, a jury was empanelled and his trial commenced with Prosecutors Abigail Gibbs and Narissa Leander leading evidence against him.
However, as the trial progressed, Archibald opted to plead guilty. His plea was accepted by the judge who deferred sentencing to yesterday for a probation report.
Archibald admitted that on June 4, 2015 at Pavement View Restaurant and Bar, in Demerara, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Wallace, with intent to murder him.
The State also presented an alternate count which alleged that Archibald wounded Wallace with intent to maim, disable, disfigure or cause him grievous bodily harm.
In the midst of passing sentencing, Justice Kissoon told Archibald that compensation was no excuse for his actions.
The offender, who told the court that he was “confused” at the time of the chopping, was later taken away to begin serving his time.
During his time in the witness box, Wallace told the court that on the day in question, he was on duty, when Archibald, whom he knows, ran into the bar and began chopping him with a cutlass.
He recounted that it was public-spirited citizens who rushed him to the hospital.
According to the victim, Archibald would usually visit the bar to collect his wife, who also worked there.
When questioned by the Prosecutors, Wallace denied ever being in a relationship with the man’s wife.
During the trial, Archibald had denied chopping Wallace. In fact, he denied being at the scene.
Wallace’s evidence was corroborated by the bar’s disk jockey (DJ) Mark Blackette, who told the court that he was at work, when he witnessed Archibald, with whom he was familiar, chopping Wallace with a cutlass.
Prior to sentencing, Archibald had been out on $500,000 bail.
